it's mini review time! Swan oyster Depot 1517 Polk St. SF This place reminds me so much of little seafood joints on the east coast which is where I grew up. The seafood is extremely fresh and simply prepared, just salads, cocktails, chowders and raw. The raw oysters are particularly good but if you don't like oysters, the clam chowder is excellent, so are the crab and prawns. this is the ONLY place I ever order seafood cocktail because you don't get the teeny little sea monkey-like pieces you get in other places' seafood cocktails but nice big chunks and unlike a lot of other places where the cocktails aren't too fresh (yerk) theirs are super fresh and they actually listen when you ask them to go light on the cocktail sauce. It's one long narrow passage with a counter and rather rickety stools but that's part of its charm (sort of like the cheesy special effects on old Dr. Who eps if that makes any sense) and the guys who work there are super super friendly. I screwed up royally and didn't know it was cash only and tried to use the old plastic and the guy was actually nice enough to let me run across the street to the ATM. Also, they only do lunch and not dinner, if you want dinner there the best thing to do is buy fresh raw seafood at their on site fish market and take it home and cook it up for dinner.
