bkmkiwi did the "5 things that remind me of you" meme and one got picked that I wasn't expecting at all. I'll do that one last.
1. Atheism. I was actually brought up christian and I'm the only atheist in my family, in fact my mom is studying to be a minister and two of my cousins already are ministers. I know if they knew I was an atheist they would go nuts so I just said I was "not religious" and they were pissed, especially my dad. As far as I'm concerned that was a test and they failed. there are many many reasons why I am an atheist, here are only a few:
no one has ever proven there is a god. I believe in things for which there are evidence.
I would rather believe in no god at all rather than a god who seems cruel (why are people sometimes born with terrible diseases?) or one who does things that seem absolutely pointless (why would I have an incredibly high sex drive and yet look terrible? and it's not all in my head, either, I hear what people say and I see how they react to me)
the bible has some awful shit in it. it says slavery is OK, it condones killing people, including little kids, etc.
most religions do not respect women at all
most religions condemn gays
millions of people have been killed or tortured in the name of religion
it is possible to have a strong sense of ethics without religion
without religion life has meaning; people give it meaning
I have no interest in converting anybody and in fact most of us atheists do not go around trying to convert people; it's religious people who do this.
If someone believes in a religion and it makes them happy I don't have a problem with it as long as they don't go around ramming it down other people's throats or using it as an excuse to be an asshat.
I am actually happier now than I was when I was a christian.
It has been years since I felt this strongly about a fictional character. I love his wit, his intelligence, his refusal to take any bullshit off anyone, and Hugh Laurie is such a damn good actor that he can make people like a character who's that obnoxious. there are certain things about him that I can relate to very strongly. We are both pissed off because life has fucked us over and we know it. We're both music geeks (I wish I had his talent) to the point where we can really lose ourselves in music. We're both skeptics. We are both disabled (I have Asperger's). We both have a very sarcastic sense of humor and no patience. We both have no tolerance for stupid people.
Life is too short not to be yourself. I am a non-conformist not because I am trying to prove some point but because if I like something or somebody, it's because I like it, whether it's popular with the masses or not.
4. A Bit Of Fry and Laurie
I liked this show even before I decided I wanted to lick butterscotch sauce off of Hugh. it's so funny! A lot of the sketches are up there with Python on the British Silliness Scale. I actually sometimes call akumatatsu61 (my roomie and best friend) "m' colleague". he is a large, charming, smart gay man who kind of reminds me of Stephen Fry. this is a conversation we had about three days ago when he was making dinner;
Him: I can't find the lid to that damn pot, you wanna call Hugh up and ask him about it!?
Me: (laughing because I know the sketch he's referring to) If I had Hugh's damn phone number I'd ask him some far more interesting questions, does the stubble tickle? do you want a blow job?
I don't drink coffee, maybe this is a misinterpretation of my screen name. "Frappe" is actually a rather obscure word meaning "milkshake". I love milkshakes and I used to work in an ice cream parlor. i was going to be chocolate shake but someone else on LJ already had that name so I picked "frappe" and misspelled it on purpose to avoid somebody else having it. I've never liked coffee, I prefer tea, Coke or hot chocolate depending on where I am, what time it is and what sort of a mood I'm in.
